The 10-hour training days for firefighter recruits started at 7:30 a.m. with calisthenics.
Then came the ladder and hose drills.
At some points, Sue Rosenthal thought that 1980 Seattle department training couldn't get worse. "Then I'd get through that and there'd be something else right around the corner," she told the P-I that year.
Now, 28 years later, Rosenthal has become the Seattle Fire Department's first woman assistant chief, advancing her position as the department's highest-ranking woman.
"All the women in the fire department have always been the strongest supporters and the people who I turn to first to seek advice and counsel," she told seattlepi.com Wednesday. "The people who supported me are as responsible for my success as anybody.
"I couldn't have done any of this alone."
